Design: a layout built around your property

Custom design starts with how you want to use your property. The layout, plant and tree selection and any added features follow from that.

Plants and trees for a design can come from Sam’s own nursery. You can also walk in during business hours and speak with a landscape design expert.

At Sam’s

Build: installation by our team

Build work is the hands-on side of a project. It covers hardscape work, irrigation and fencing, subtle outdoor lighting, and planting of trees, shrubs and specialty plants.

Which pieces apply depends on your design. A project might use one of them or several.

At Sam’s

Maintenance: available on its own

Maintenance is offered as a stand-alone service. If you already have a landscape you like, you do not need a redesign to get help caring for it.

Tell us what is there today and what kind of upkeep you want, and we can talk through the options.

General guidance

What to consider when planning a landscape project

Educational tips that apply to any project. They are not a statement of what Sam’s provides.

These points apply to almost any landscape project in the Texas Hill Country.

  • How you use the space

Decide whether the area is for entertaining, play, privacy, views or low-effort curb appeal. The answer shapes everything else.

  • Water

Hill Country summers can be hot and dry. Match plant choices to how much water you can supply, with irrigation or by hand.

  • Order of work

Hardscape and irrigation usually go in before planting, because digging later can disturb new plants.

  • Upkeep

Decide up front how much maintenance you want to do yourself. It affects plant choices and layout.

  • Phasing

A larger plan can often be built in stages, which lets you spread out the work and refine ideas as you go.

  • Local rules

Fences, structures and drainage changes can be affected by city, county or HOA rules. Check early.

What to bring or tell us for a consultation

You do not need a finished plan. These details help us understand the property and what you are hoping for.

For a design or build project

  • A description of the property, or photos from several angles to show us in person
  • A rough sketch or measurements of the area
  • What you want to use the space for
  • Features you want to keep, such as mature trees
  • Known constraints: slopes, utilities, drainage, HOA rules
  • Your timeline and a rough sense of scope

For maintenance only

  • A description of what is in the landscape now, or photos to show us in person
  • The kind of upkeep you are looking for
  • Anything that is struggling or needs attention
