General guidance

How the plant categories differ

Educational tips that apply to any project. They are not a statement of what Sam’s provides.

The categories on this page do different jobs in a yard. Knowing the difference makes it easier to describe what you need.

  • Native Texas plants

Plants native to Texas tend to be adapted to local rainfall and heat. Ask which ones suit your sun and soil.

  • Mature trees

A larger tree gives shade and structure sooner. It also needs more care in planting and watering than a small one.

  • Shrubs and grasses

Shrubs give beds and borders their shape. Grasses add texture and movement. Check mature height and spread for both.

  • Flowering perennials

Perennials come back each year, though many die back between seasons.

  • Fruit trees

Fruit trees need sun and room. Some varieties need a second tree nearby to set fruit, so ask before you buy.

  • Seasonal color

Seasonal color is a quick way to refresh a bed or pot, and it is usually swapped out as the seasons change.

What to consider before you choose a plant

Educational tips that apply to any project. They are not a statement of what Sam’s provides.

A few answers about the spot will do more for your plant choices than any other detail.

  • Sun and shade

Note how many hours of direct sun the spot gets in summer, when the Hill Country sun is strongest.

  • Soil and drainage

Many Hill Country properties have shallow, rocky soil. Check whether water drains or pools after rain.

  • Water access

Decide whether you will hand-water or have irrigation. Plants that need regular water suit a spot you can reach easily.

  • Mature size

Plan for how big the plant will get, not how big it is in the pot.

  • Wildlife

Deer browse is common in the Hill Country. Ask staff about plants for areas where deer are a concern.

How to prepare for a nursery visit

You can walk in with nothing and still get help. A little preparation lets the conversation go further.

  • Photos of the area taken in daylight, from a few angles
  • Rough measurements of the bed, border or planting area
  • How many hours of direct sun the spot gets
  • Whether the spot has irrigation or you will water by hand
  • What you want the planting to do: shade, privacy, color, food or something else
  • Any plants you already have, or plants you have admired
